Gareth hart is an independent artist, based in Cockatoo, Victoria. After over 10 years as a choreographer in Australia, Gareth Hart has seen his work performed in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Canberra and most recently in the U.K. and France.
Gareth’s work is invested in the creation of live dance which transcends the need for audience entertainment, instead creating unique experiences which are rich, textural and embodied (for both performer and audience). His critically acclaimed work has attracted numerous 5 star reviews, and has been referred to as “Exquisite”, “Profound” and "deeply visceral”. He has been a recipient of the Sir Rupert Hamer Family Scholarship, Walter & Muriel McConnan Memorial Trust, Australia Council ArtStart Grant, and Arts Victoria Professional Pathways Scholarship. In 2012, his seminal work ‘Ellipsis’ was nominated for an Australian Dance Award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance’.
In 2012 Gareth obtained a Masters of Choreography from the Victorian College of the Arts, where he was awarded the ‘Outstanding Postgraduate Research’ prize. His time at the VCA was spent paying specific attention to a deep understanding of the phenomenology of performance.
Gareth’s process is based in an investigative improvisation process, which he has developed through extensive solo studio/performance experience over the past 12 years.
In recent years, Gareth has been forging a career as a professional arts producer, having spent two years as the Artistic Director of CRACK Theatre Festival (part of This Is Not Art), working with the producer team at the London International Festival of Theatre, and most recently managing ‘hillsceneLIVE’ for Burrinja Cultural Centre – a quarterly mini-festival and live art showcase.
