I work out of Orbost in Far East Gippsland. My host organisation is Far East Victoria Landcare.
East Gippsland Catchment covers an area of 2.1 million ha with a population of 43,615 and is predominantly rural area, with many small communities and townships. Extending from the Victorian Alps to the Coast and from the Gippsland Lakes to the New South Wales border, it incorporates substantial areas of national park, lakes, rivers and coastal areas. Approximately 80% of the region (1.7 million ha) is public land with private (419,300 ha) concentrated on red gum plains, coastal plains, mountain plateau and fertile river valleys. Primary agriculture enterprises incorporate dairy, wool production, sheep and cattle production, and horticulture. Within the region are three Landcare Networks; East Gippsland Landcare Network (Bairnsdale), Far East Victoria Landcare (Orbost), and Snowy River Interstate Landcare Committee (Bombala, NSW). Together these networks incorporate 31 groups and 700+ family memberships, this equates to an area of 314,434 ha.
