Creek Revegetation at Peel

Description

PEEL RIVER FIELD DAY

Winburndale Rivulet flows from high country north of Bathurst into Clear Creek. Photos from the 1930s show a landscape of cleared hills and streams lined with exotic trees.

But with clearing, the landscape has been shaped by rapid stream flow in floods. Torrents eroded banks leaving bare gravel flats and hardy plants such as casuarinas which can bend in the torrent. Over the past two decades, Woolpacks landcare group and Peel Trust have fenced off riparian areas, which has revegetated stream banks creating pools for fish and wildlife. Gravel beds have stabilised.

Where the sheoaks have not established, there are sheer eroded walls and stranded fencelines.
