Macarthur Scouts Caring for our Environment
8 Jul 2009

Macarther Scouts Landcare began in 1995 when the Group applied for and received funding from the ACT Environment Grants Program to do some tree planting adjacent to Isabella Drive, not far from the Scout Hall.

In 1999, the Group was successful in obtaining further funding from the Olympic Landcare Fund and decided to take on the larger project of restoring the native vegetation of Gilmore Hill and to care for the land around Rose Cottage.

In May 2000, the Group undertook our first major planting of over 500 trees and shrubs on the rise above Isabella Drive as the road goes over the hill and down towards the Monaro Highway. This planting has proven to be very successful. It was meant to be on the route of the Olympic Torch, which as it turned out sped down the highway in a car from Canberra to Cooma before the run relay recommenced. Its great to walk through this planting now and see how much the plants have grown and the amount of birdlife they now attract. When you go along Isabella Drive towards the highway take a glance up and appreciate the trees scouts planted.

It a great opportunity for scouts like James to promote scouting and support Landcare acitivities in our local community.
