Organic Farming

Sam and Kylie Collins purchased an avocado and mango farm near Mareeba.

The Northern Gulf Resource Management Group assisted them to obtain a grant from the Mareeba Dimbulah small farm incentive program, part of the National Landcaqre program, to convert to organic farming.

Spreading mulch under the trees cut down the weeds and eliminated the need for pesticides.

The use of soil moisture monitoring saved water usage by up to 40%.

These techniques have enabled Sam and Kylie to improve the biodiversity of their farm, reduce water usage, and provide better quality avocados and mangos for the market.
