The Experimental Gardens was the first developmental phase of the gardens in 1873. This section of the gardens was used to trial plants that could possibly have agricultural potential. They experimented whether the plants could adapt to the climate and soil conditions of Central Queensland (in text reference brochure). According to the Rockhampton Regional Council (2013) there are a wide variety of palms and trees from all over the world, including the Kapok Tree, Pecan Nut and the giant Bald Cypress (Rockhampton Regional Council, 2013).
