At the headwaters of Water Park Creek in the Dismal Swamp, and to the south and north of Corio Bay, large wetlands occur in low-lying sections of this coastal plain.  Most of the year the wetlands is undisturbed and a large number of animal species and plant species, such as the Melaleucas thrive. A layer of accumulated peaty soil, which forms a water holding base in the sand dune swamps is under threat when the severe late dry season fires can burn the peaty base underlying them, compromising their ability to hold water.
