Farming in the Greenough Flats

During the early days of settlement, the farming techniques were very basic. Although the soil there was perfect for planting crops, some of the farmers only had a simple shovel to use to plough their land. The seed that needed to be planted was carried around in a bag on the farmers back and spread by hand.

Despite the poor equipment and farming methods availble to the first settlers, fantastic crops still managed to grow.

Question Time:

1. Why do you think the farmers had poor equipment back then?

2. List some differences between the farming back then to the way we farm now. Compare the two.
