Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre, Opera by Children Workshops and classroom or community implem

Opera by Children is the in-school arts education arm of the Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre in Logan, Utah. General Director, Michael Ballam, had the vision that children could become a new generation of thinkers if given the power to create their own operas (write them, produce them, own them, trust their own creativity), who as adults, would contribute original thought and leadership to society. He gathered a team of professional artists and educators to create the program. It began in one school, in one classroom, alongside one teacher and quickly blossomed to a state wide program.

As Opera by Children begins the 18th year of assisting young people in creating their own operas it is clear children who learn to trust themselves, and those around them, do succeed - not only in an original opera but also in countless other ways! Over 75,000 students, in Utah alone, have created their very own original opera as a class. This year, 176 classrooms, for a total of 5,310 students, are having the opportunity to write, sing, dance, draw, paint and act their way through their own original operas. UFOMT OBC mentors work reciprocally with teachers empowering them to integrate the opera writing and performing experience into the core curricula.

Each year, teacher training workshops are offered in Logan, Utah and around the state in rural locations where interest is high. Our hope and mandate is to be in every school district and influence the lives of all students in every school as we offer training and opportunities for teachers and students in professional development and classroom study in the arts.  We do this in partnership with 9 other organizations working together with the Utah State Office of Education in the Professional Outreach program in the Schools (POPS) program.

Rural or Urban locations far from Logan geographically may request to have an introductory presentation about Opera by Children in their district meetings for principals or teacher training sessions. A location may elect to host a full 9 hour all-day training for teachers planning to implement the process in their classrooms; a required element of the program. Or may additionally (or separately) invite our Art Mentor Team to train teachers in the scenic design and painting skills for mural size art projects, including scenery for Opera by Children productions.

It is also possible to host a community event that introduces the creative art techniques of Opera by Children to the community and host parents, teachers, business and community leaders and their children to experience the creative process and learn of its value in a fun community building experience.  It is a great way to create an opera that celebrates the local history of the community and add a fun element to a community festival experience as a culminating performance event.

Contact Pamela Gee, Opera by Children Director, to host such an experience.  Costs are variable dependent on location, but the  in-school application of the Opera by Children process in Utah are free save the $30 training fee for workshop materials.  Costs being covered by the Utah State Legislature through the POPS program as well as private foundations and individual donors.
