In the Yir-Yoront language, Kowanyama means "The place of many waters."

The wetlands in this region include freshwater lakes, sand plains, beach ridges, swamps, lakes and intertidal flats. These wetlands are in good condition.

Management of these lands is the responsibility of the Kowanyama Aboriginal Land and Natural Resources Management Office (KALNRMO). KALNRMO operate a water quality programme to monitor the condition of these wetlands.

KALNRMO is widely regarded as a leader in indigenous land management.
