Description
St Pauls village, Moa Island celebrated the first Puppet Show of it’s kind in the Torres Strait – with puppets made of ghost nets.
The show highlighted the problems associated with discarded or lost fishing nets – a phenomenon that GhostNets Australia is acutely aware of. The nets, mostly international, cause extensive damage to reefs and marine life. This negatively impacts communities across northern Australia, particularly coastal indigenous communities known as ‘Saltwater People’ reliant on the ocean both as food source and cultural connections. GNA now work to gather data, clean up coastlines and create public awareness on this growing problem www.ghostnets.com.au
