The paddlewheel steamer "Maid of Sker" was built for Charles Philpott, a sugar planter and timber miller of Nerang, Qld. "The Maid" as she was affectionately known, ran a weekly schedule transporting sugar from mills at Nerang and Pimpama Island to the CSR refinery in Brisbane and, on the return trips, supplies for the farmers and millers and fuel for electricity generations at Southport.

In November 1896, Fritz Kleinschmidt purchased equal partnership with his brother-in-law Tom Gentner in "the Maid of Sker". Fritz's brother Ferdinand Kleinschmidt some time between 1870 and 1876 acquired a punt to carry supplies and produce for farmers and millers along the Logan River.

The Kleinschmidt family also had an Arrowroot Mill at Pimpama.
