Every three years, the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre holds its large regional festival. The Kimberley is an area of immense social need, with Australia's highest rate of youth suicide. Clinical mainstream mental health approaches are not what is needed. As Professor Michael J Chandler says, Cultural Wounds Require Cultural Healing. Events such as the KALACC Festivals play a tremendously important role in maintaining and developing identity and pride. If Government is serious about Closing the Gap, then it has to get serious about investing in culture and in community development - not an army of white fellas in white coats
