Animating Spaces is an innovative, three-year state-wide multi-arts project that will revitalise and celebrate significant or unusual spaces within fifteen regional communities through locally-driven arts activities and events. Communities have the opportunity to re-imagining their town, employ local artists and creatives, build capacity, develop cultural project management skills, receive mentoring and support and funding assistance to present three arts projects.

The first of the five Animating Spaces 2013 burst into colour and community participation on the weekend of 14-16 June with the Ignite Redlands Light Art Festival that took place in Cleveland. Ignite Redlands Light Art Festival drew together artists, businesses and the wider Redland’s community to transform the commercial heart of Cleveland over three days and nights into a land of light through projections, exhibitions, crafts, live entertainment and a host of engaging activities planned to excite and entertain the whole family. TransArt celebrated the assortment of transport carrier in Redlands – trains, buses, ferries, cars and trucks – and showcased local cultural artists to the travelling public. Four unique concert events bursted into life on and adjacent to local transport hubs. Light Living Art workshops were an artelier of hands-on activities and art installations, switched on to the idea of light, reflection and shadows while using art methods that promote the idea of living “lightly”. By using recycled and re-purposed materials and by striving to abolish waste and damage these workshops, designed by artists Carly Kotynski, Lesa Hepburn and two collaborating artists Sue Beyer and Caitlin Halsall, aimed to leave a minimal eco footprint. Light Arts Projections/Installations festooned Bloomfield Street and Raby Bay Harbour Park, Cleveland by “shining a light” on art through colourful street lighting installations and projections on architecture, trees and landscapes. On Saturday night a light art parade proceeded through Bloomfield Street from Queen Street down into Raby Bay Harbour Park.

Animating Spaces is a project of Artslink Queensland to assist fifteen regional Queensland communities from 2013-2015 and is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts through the Community Partnerships Fund, the Australian Government through the Regional Arts Fund, the State Government through Arts Queensland and the participating local councils.
