Autism-Asperger's ACT School Holiday Workshop

This project was a pilot project specifically designed to offer arts-based activities to children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and their siblings and carers. Consultation with Autism Asperger’s ACT highlighted the difficulties for many families with a child with ASD to engage with an existing school holiday program – including many ‘inclusive’ programs due to their child’s specific needs.
This project allowed for the exploration of a range of ‘clay-based’ and ‘painting-based’ activities to be offered for families in a fun, responsive and inclusive environment especially catering for children with ASD.
The workshops were flexible and adaptive to the needs and interests of the children, and their careers, with both stringent structures and open-learning options offered. The inclusion of siblings and carers responded to the needs of the families and allowed for greater family participation.
This pilot program has become the basis for a current funding application for a year-long program with new arts mediums being explored each school holiday period, with professional facilitators / teachers especially designed for children with ASD and their families.
The pilot project had a total budget of $500 – including staffing / material / miscellaneous / in-kind support – funded through the Community Cultural Inclusion Program by the Tuggeranong Arts Centre and the Regional Art Fund. The funding application is for $4,000.
