Land-Grant Farm Under Seige for Urban Development

Historic Gill Tract Farm is on land owned by UC-Berkeley, a land grant university. For the past 20 years it has been used by community members, students, and faculty to create a Center for Urban Ag, but UCB believes it should be developed. In 2012, Occupy the Farm’s land occupations pushed out Whole Foods from the development, transferred 10 acres of land from Capital Projects to the College of Natural Resources for 10 years, and established a new community farm project on 1.13 acres. On 2.26.15, 60 trees were demolished on the southern 5+ acres of the tract, so Occupy the Farm and allies are concerned but undeterred.
