Alton is located on the Mississippi River just north of St. Louis. It is notable for hits limestone promontaries, as well as its role during the Civil War and its music culture. Alton is the home of jazz musician Miles Davis, who wrote extensively on his experience growing up in the Alton community. 

Because of Alton's adjacency to the Mississippi River, it fell victim to the Great Flood of 1993, in which the high water level caused serious damage to the city. Many local businesses were effected. 

In the 20th Century, manufacturing and industry became major characteristics of the Alton community.
