In May 2006 the Gregory River Landcare Group formed a “twinning relationship” with The Bulimba Creek Catchment management group (B4C) from Brisbane and the Southern Gulf Catchments NRM Region (SGC). This “partnership” has steadily developed a relationship with the small communities in the Gregory and Nicholson River Catchments.

This work has been achieved through various means. Firstly “healthy food gardens” were established at each school in each community. Secondly now in its fourth edition the children from Gregory, Doomadgee and Burketown contribute to the “dream river calendar”. Thirdly SGC display their work and products at the Gregory Mayday weekend where many people travel long distances for the annual canoe races, horse races and bull rides. To further mingle with the crowd the twinning partners then form a team and compete in the canoe race. Over successive years we have won gold, silver and bronze.

It is hoped the twinning partnership would bring greater skills and knowledge into these remote communities so we can further enlist their help and work together in protecting the wonderful environment of the area. Now together we have begun to target the noxious weeds that are invading the pristine riparian zone. Landholders, Local Government and the Landcare Group have all joined in to fight this environmental threat.
