Published To

Meet Shannon Roberts. He lives in Western North Carolina and runs Horse Collar Farm. His family has farmed the same land for five generations and Shannon hopes to pass it on to his two sons, Tyler, 14, and Tate, 7. Learn about using pasture-poultry to help your cattle herd, why other farmers in the area thought Shannon was crazy for his chicken plans, and what an impact his project has had on his community. *You might be wondering: where are all the chickens?! Shannon had processed the last of his chickens some weeks before this story came together. The Tobacco Communities Reinvestment Fund (TCRF) assists farmers in developing new sources of agricultural income through provision of cost-share grants. This story is part of a series documenting innovative farmers throughout the state of North Carolina. This program is made possible with support from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.
