"Aurelia", Matron Austin's Maternity Hospital

On the corner of Bowen Terrace and Barker Street (behind the Village Twin) stood Aurelia, a big old home, conducted by Matron Mary Jane Austin as a maternity home, later a guest house. One of the babies born there in 1929 was the late Gloria Grant, co-author of the local best-selling book Reflections on New Farm. Possibly one of the first sounds that Gloria heard after coming into the world, was the rattle of trams down Barker Street... (photo courtesy of Auriel Woolley)
