AILAN KORES made its triumphant debut during Queensland Music Festival 2011, joining six island communities through song. The project grew out of the community’s enthusiasm for orchestral music, and built on the strong tradition of choral singing in the Torres Strait Islands. Local languages and harmonies were woven together with some of the most challenging choral repertoire in Western music, creating new works and arrangements that are musically and culturally significant. With communities from some of Australia’s most remote islands, AILAN KORES helped to mitigate the impact of isolation, build community skills and raise awareness of TSI culture.
