On Eyre Peninsula areas of shallow groundwater exit where the water table is only a few feet below the ground. It's common practice to construct deep and open excavations into the aquifers to access the groundwater. These excavations have been labled GATs - Groundwater Access Trenches. GATs are a contamination risk to local aquifers and the open pools water generally get salty and polluted providing poor quality water to the user. Better management option are available......
