Arts and mental health in regional South Australia

Arts and Mental Health Development Officer with Country Arts SA and Country Health SA Mental Health Simone Gillam promoted a scriptwriting workshop by Shorter + Sweeter, playwrite Alex Broun on his visit to Port Lincoln. The workshop was delivered to a broad group of enthusiastic local community members. From there connections were made between Mifsa - Mental illness fellowship SA and a local script writer. Discussions lead to a regular meeting involving planning and developing scripts that focus on mental health issues. Adelaide based theatre company's Urban Myth and No strings attached (funded by Arts SA) travelled to Port Lincoln and assisted the group with script development and theatre/drama skills. Mifsa staff members and community members embraced the project and created a play called "The Hearer" culminating in taking the play to TheMHS, 21st Annual Conference for the Mental Health Services of Australia and New Zealand. The play was performed at the conference by the staff and participants of Mifsa to conference delegates. The feedback has been very positive and the group is now considering their next project.
