they're called 'upside down creeks' because the water mainly runs underground in the long dry season (which is most of the year). The water table is critical to this area. I was surprised to learn that the Pilliga, despite it's 'limited fresh water habitats and a frequent scarcity of fresh water' is home to 5 species of freshwater crustaceans!
