Mr Charles Johnson, a teacher in Sydney, was recruited by Mr R. Macdonnell, Board of General Education Inspector during his visit there in early 1861. Mr Johnson who was expected to arrive in Brisbane no later than April, did not arrive until later that year. He was appointed the first headmaster of the Fortitude Valley National School, cnr Ann and Brunswick streets.
