The four Wass brothers, Michael, Stuart, Nigel and Haydon and their respective families manage ‘The Plains’, a 10,360 hectare (ha) property located 30km south of Nyngan. Historically a sheep and cattle property, in the late 1950’s the family started to experiment with cropping. This year they will plant 2500 ha of wheat, 3000 ha of canola and 500 ha of chickpeas. The Wass family are engaging new technology and farming practices to improve their land’s productivity and ensure long-term returns. “We are aiming to improve soil carbon and organic matter into our soils through the use of zero till, controlled traffic farming practices and flexible crop rotations of cereal, legume and oil seeds” said Haydon.
