Seeing the World Beyond
27 Jun 2012

A digital photography program was offered as an alternative means to engagement and learning for a group of 14 VCAL students. The program was held one day a week for a semester, culminating in a public exhibition to celebrate the work of the participants. The school involved was considered to be amongst one of the most disadvantaged in Australia.

The aims of the projects were to engage the students in other ways of knowing, observing and acknowledging the world they live in. The photographs the students took were not designed to be ‘works of art’ but rather to be realistic windows showing what they saw in their world. The project opened many doors for these students, including meeting residents from a near-by aged care facility leading to meaningful relationships and understanding of the challenges of aging.
