The other Time Capsule - by Betty Knox

On Armistice Day on 11 November (now Remembrance Day), all the local RSL Sub-Branches would hold a concert at the City hall. During the evening red paper rose petals were thrown down on the audience from the ceiling. The concerts I remember would have been just prior to WWII. My dad was President of The Nundah Northgate RSL and my sister Daphne and I helped throw the rose petals.

The local schools held eisteddfods at the City Hall. My sister Daphne attended the Nundah State School between 1932 and 1939 and my daughter Robyn attended Aspley East State School between 1965 and 1972. Mr Jim Billborough was conductor for Nundah State School.

My son Peter Knox was an apprentice Fitter and Turner with Brisbane City Council and made the time capsule for City Hall’s 50th birthday in 1980. The capsule was placed in a pillar in the Brisbane Room. It will be opened on the 100th anniversary of City Hall in the year 2030.
