Mighty Gospel Clouds: Thank You Jesus (1978)
10 Dec 2012
Published To

A performance by the Mighty Gospel Clouds at an unidentified A.M.E. church in Arkabutla, Mississippi. (The Clouds were identified at the taping as being from Coldwater, Mississippi, although groups with the same names also hailed from Detroit and Marvin, Georgia. They may or may not be the same group that recorded for the Champ label. Any information about them would be much appreciated.) Shot by Alan Lomax, John Bishop, and Worth Long, August 27, 1978. For more information about the American Patchwork filmwork, Alan Lomax, and his collections, visit http://culturalequity.org. [02.10.01]

From 1978 to 1985, Lomax travelled throughout the South collecting recordings in five culture regions — Mississippi Delta and Hill Country, Central and Southern Appalachia, New Orleans, Cajun Louisiana, and Johns Island, S.C. — compiling footage for what would become his "American Patchwork" series of PBS. This clip is drawn from the Mississippi Delta and Hill Country collection. For more about this and the other American Patchwork collections, visit the Alan Lomax Archive's YouTube channel
