John Dee Holeman, Algia Mae Hinton (on guitar), and friends extemporize on "Yall Come," with flat-footing and train-imitation shuffling. Shot by Alan Lomax and crew at Hinton's home in Johnston County, North Carolina, July 29, 1983. For more videos from the American Patchwork fieldwork and information about Alan Lomax and his collections, visit: http://research.culturalequity.org. [03.28.20]

From 1978 to 1985, Lomax travelled throughout the South collecting recordings in five culture regions — Mississippi Delta and Hill Country, Central and Southern Appalachia, New Orleans, Cajun Louisiana, and Johns Island, S.C. — compiling footage for what would become his "American Patchwork" series of PBS. This clip is drawn from the Central and Southern Appalachia collection. For more about this and the other American Patchwork collections, visit the Alan Lomax Archive's YouTube channel
