Stanley Hicks and his first cousin Ray perform "Roving Gambler" (which Stanley calls "Roamin' Gambler"). Shot by Alan Lomax and crew at Ray's home in Banner Elk, Beech Mountain, North Carolina, September 8-9, 1982. From 1978 to 1985, Lomax travelled throughout the South collecting recordings in five culture regions — Mississippi Delta and Hill Country, Central and Southern Appalachia, New Orleans, Cajun Louisiana, and Johns Island, S.C. — compiling footage for what would become his "American Patchwork" series of PBS. This clip is drawn from the Central and Southern Appalachia collection. For more about this and the other American Patchwork collections, visit the Alan Lomax Archive's YouTube channel
