Tom Norman performs "Backstep Cindy," left-handed on a right-handed banjo, with Chester McMillian on guitar at the Fancy Gap Elementary School, Fancy Gap, Virginia. Norman, McMillian, Whit Sizemore and Audine Lineberry (who can be seen in the background) were members of the Shady Mountain Ramblers. Shot by Alan Lomax and crew, July 23, 1983. From 1978 to 1985, Lomax travelled throughout the South collecting recordings in five culture regions — Mississippi Delta and Hill Country, Central and Southern Appalachia, New Orleans, Cajun Louisiana, and Johns Island, S.C. — compiling footage for what would become his "American Patchwork" series of PBS. This clip is drawn from the Central and Southern Appalachia collection. For more about this and the other American Patchwork collections, visit the Alan Lomax Archive's YouTube channel
